Columbine loves to garden with fruit, vegetables and flowers.  There is nothing more wonderful than using all of these skills on one landscape.  A great example of this is the apple tree garden in Pound Ridge.  Designed as a walk through from house to pool area, the trees provide four seasons of interest while the perennials provide foliage and flowers from spring to fall.  The apples are delicious!

We who garden in the northeast U.S. rely heavily on Hydrangea macrophylla for big beautiful blooms from early summer through frost.  Unfortunately, this year even those cultivars that bloom on new wood (in this picture ‘Penny Mac’) had their buds blasted during our protracted cold spell this past spring.  Fortunately, this garden has phlox, several long blooming clematis (‘Betty Corning’ and a pink flowering C. texensis whose name I’ve forgotten) and Rosa ‘Blaze’ to keep the color going late into the season.
